In the large field of evaporation, Sulzer Chemtech has concentrated its efforts on film evaporation technology, as used in organic chemistry to produce high purity products by evaporation, distillation or stripping. Thin film evaporation is required for viscous and/or heat sensitive products. In certain cases evaporation can proceed to a dry residue or to crystal formation.
Sulzer Chemtech thin film technology includes process equipment with "non agitated" films, such as rising film and falling film evaporators and mechanically agitated films which are created in wiped film evaporators.

FALLING FILM EVAPORATOR FV

The liquid film flows as a thin film on the inside of the heated vertical tubes, driven by gravity.

The main features and characteristics of the Sulzer Chemtech falling film evaporator are:

• special liquid distribution system
• short residence time 5-10 sec.
• high heat transfer rates

Applications
• evaporation of heat sensitive
   products

Experience
• sizes from 0.3 to 200m2
• single pass or with recirculation
• vapours co-current or counter-current
• multi-stage systems, sometimes in combination with wiped film evaporators
• over 600 evaporators installed world-wide

WIPED FILM EVAPORATOR DV

The film is mechanically created and agitated by rotor blades.

The main features and characteristics of the Sulzer Chemtech wiped film evaporators are:

• several rotor types
• integrated centrifugal demister
• with or without overhanging rotor
• reliable robust design
• short residence times 10 - 30 sec. with a very
  narrow distribution characteristic
• very low liquid hold-up (a few lt)

Applications
• evaporation of heat sensitive products
• distillation of components with high boiling temperatures
• processing of viscous products (viscosity up to 50'000cP)
• stripping of volatiles from products
• for products containing solids
• for crusts/deposits forming systems

SHORT PATH EVAPORATOR KWV

Similar to wiped film evaporators, the product film is agitated by a rotor inside the machine. However, the heat exchanger for condensing the distillate is also located inside the machine, thus enabling the processing of mixtures at vacuum ranges down to about 0.01 mbar

Applications
• distillation of very heat sensitive products

Experience (DV and KWV)
• special alloys (cladded or solid), glass-lined evaporators
• operation under vacuum down to 0.01 mbara
• multi-stage arrangement combined together or with falling film or columns
• sizes 0.13-22m2
• over 200 units operating world-wide
